You may have seen some pictures floating around on our Facebook page recently that promote our 2020 SEC giving catalog. In case you don’t know what SEC is, that is what we call our Summer English Camp program, our largest ministry during the year. As this ministry has grown the last few years and we have expanded from one camp to two, we have been exploring ways to increase our budget and opportunities for the camp. One way we discussed was a giving catalog, providing practical ways those that support us could get involved. The catalog itself explains many ways, but I wanted to take a moment to give you a deeper, or more amusing, look at how your money might be used.
Each week, a group of volunteers from inside and outside our team work together to lead two English clubs, one in Budapest and one in Vác, a town nearby. We take a train to get to Vác every Friday to spend a few hours with the kids that come. Some of us have seen these same kids now almost every Friday for several years. This creates a unique opportunity to not only interact with them at camp, but to also be a regular part of their lives throughout the year. In both clubs, God has created a sense of community—especially in Vác, where several of our kids have said it is their favorite part of the week. Donating to this ministry helps cover the cost of train tickets each week, which, while inexpensive, add up over time. It also helps us provide snacks for the club in Budapest—these are usually devoured by the kids as if they had never seen sweets before. Essentially, your donation allows us to continue consistently pouring into the lives of these kids.
Another Item in our giving catalog is our SEC themed pens. These are just pens with our logo and website that we use for various activities at English Camp and in English clubs. Now, this may seem like a silly thing, but I am telling you, these pens are A HIT. Since we last ordered in 2015, many of our pens have slowly disappeared—we suspect this is largely due to some of SEC’s young fans who lovingly slip a couple in their backpacks any chance they get. But truthfully, over time they wear out and run out and we are desperately in need of a new supply. Your donation would help cover this cost and allow us to invest in new pens that can be lovingly stolen as mementos by our students.
Translation and Administration
Another big need we have this year is for consistent help in translating materials and replying to inquiries. To make our marketing and information more accessible to kids who may not speak much English, we try to provide both English and Hungarian translations. In addition to this, during camp registration season, we get a lot of registrations that require follow-up as well as questions that need answered. If you don’t speak Hungarian perfectly, email communication takes three times as long as it should. Though the emails may be easy to understand, we want to make sure that our responses are professional and accurate. Your donation would make it possible for us to contract someone to do this on a weekly basis for the months leading up to camp.
There are many more options than this in the giving catalog, but I hope this gave you a bit more of glimpse into our needs for Summer English Camp and ways you can partner with us to follow the Lord’s leading in this ministry.
